REHAU Offers SupportEdge™ Foam Support Edgeband for Lightweight Panels
LEESBURG, Va., October 26, 2007 – REHAU provides SupportEdge™ foam support edgeband to address the increased volume of lightweight panels (LWPs) being produced for today’s furniture applications.
First used on hollow core doors, LWPs are now being applied to a wider range of applications in the furniture, transportation, and store fixtures industries. The increased panel thickness of LWPs visually enhances the end product, creating a high-end look without the added weight.
“Lightweight panels can weigh up to 70 percent less than solid panels–a benefit that results in reduced production, freight and packaging costs,” explained Thomas Ponater, business team manager for REHAU’s furniture group. “In addition, LWPs have great design and application flexibility. They are produced in sheets that can be cut into almost any shape.”
REHAU SupportEdge is used in place of frames to increase the rigidity and load-bearing capacity of all types of LWPs, including aluminum, plastic and paper honeycomb, and foam core. Designed for either frameless or two-sided framed LWPs, SupportEdge is fed from the coil directly onto the LWP for enhanced manufacturing efficiency. For optimum stability and impact resistance, SupportEdge can also be fed into the LWPs concurrently with standard edgeband using commercially available edgebanding equipment. The porous nature of the ABS foam material with which SupportEdge is constructed provides an excellent surface for bonding of all thermoplastic edgebanding (including PVC, ABS and PP) using hotmelt adhesives.
